I began juicing at Christmas, actually as soon as I opened the package Christmas Day I pretty much started! I have juiced almost every single day, even when Dan and I went on our weekend away together I brought my juicer and juiced. I feel so much better since I started juicing, and I have had a lot of fun trying to create new concoctions (some of the recipes I've seen at the major sites look boring... and blech!)  I have tried many different recipes, made up my own, tasted some duds and have made mistakes. For instance, I have learned that if you juice blueberries it makes the juice gloopy with a disgusting texture - in fact, it is better to skip trying to juice berries and just eat them whole... which is how I think most of us prefer them. ;-) I have also learned that it isn't worth it to juice broccoli or brussel sprouts - they ruin the flavor anyways, but a pear or ginger can fix almost anything!

I have both a centrifugal juicer and a masticating juicer and feel like the masticator is best for veggies and hard fruits while the centrifugal is better for citrus fruits, melons and other loose and watery plants with lower fiber content. I try to remember what I like, but sometimes I forget exactly what I did to make "that one that was really good" because I am always trying new things, but I am putting them here. I definitely plan to add more as I try them out.

Refreshing Grapefruit

  • 1 whole Ruby Red Grapefruit, peeled
  • 1/2 Stalk of Celery - about 6 stems

Carrot-Cilantro Margarita

  • *This is my favorite one to date!
  • Spinach, large handful
  • 3 Carrots
  • 1/2 Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 Green Apple w/ skin
  • Cilantro, handful
  • 3/4 Lime w/ skin (more or less lime, according to taste or mood)
  • (it tasted like a Margarita to me, I am used to green stuff)

Minty Pear

  • 1 whole Fennel Bulb w/ or w/o fronds (fennel has a licorice flavor)
  • 1 whole Pear (or more)
  • large handful of Mint
  • *optional* I also add a couple of Kale leaves

Beet It

  • 1 medium Beet, top removed
  • 1/4 of a large Watermelon w/ rind
  • -This is an awesome liver cleanser

Ooh, that margarita one makes me want to get a juicer! If you only had one type of juicer which one would you choose? I also can't decide between a juicer and a really strong blender like Blentec. There seems to be plusses to each. Of course there's the matter of cost which is why I don't have either yet.

That is a really hard question to answer! I use the masticating juicer more because I juice a lot of greens, it is easier for me to eat fruit as a snack than kale I love the centrifugal juicer, only problem was I felt like I was wasting a lot of greens because they don't get juiced very well, just chopped really. It really depends on what your needs and wants are.

I also have a Vitamix for smooties, LOVE MY VITAMIX!!! I guess you could do everything with the blender that you do with the juicer, it's just got fiber and isn't as smooth as the juice. I was able to get mine on sale, and you can also check Craig's list, I am betting that many people who made NY resolutions are probably wanting to get rid of some stuff.

I have a centrifugal juicer that I rarely use -- you are right: you throw too much away, unless you dehydrate all he ruffage and use it for baking, which is a pain. (I had the same problem with making my own almond milk.)

I use my Blendtec every day however... I love it! I have convinced others that a $300 blender is worth it! I would be lost without it! I make a green smoothie every morning and I use it to make flour and to mix up stuff. Raw soups in the summer can't be beat. It really is a great investment.

Gillian, I also use my blender to grind whole flax seeds, chia seeds, almonds (to add to my smoothie) IT IS AMAZING! I agree, well worth the cost. I have never tried making soups with it, though - that's actually a great idea. Is there a site you use for recipes?

I know this is probably bad, but I take the ruffage out back and put it in a compost heap or have Logan feed it to the horses if they're out.

As long as you do something with all the stuff from juicing, I think that is what matters. I just have a hard time throwing things away.

Blendtec has some recipes on their site, but I just kind of wing it --- I blend up various squash or root veggies in the winter, with coconut milk or broth and in the summer I make a gazpacho with whatever veggies I can find and lots of tomatoes or even tomato juice (Like V-8). The blender moves so fast that you can even make a raw soup that is somewhat warm!

Of course, I also use it to make my raw fudge (the recipe is on Marianne's forum.)

So if I only got one thing it sounds like a blender would be best. I'm leaning toward the Blendtec with the longer blade because it looks it'll fit under the cabinets better. Now to start looking on ebay and craigslist.

I think that's a good choice, you definitely get more bang for your buck with a blender because you can do so much with it (even make salsa)! I will have to post some smoothie recipes soon. :)

So, do you get the fiber witn a masticating juicer? Does it take massive quantities of fruits and vegetables to get a full glass of juice?

I got a VitaMix for Christmas and it is wihout a doubt one of the best purchases ever! I don't have much time to prepare dinner tonight so I'm going to make soup in my VitaMix. Five minutes is all it takes for a piping hot delicous bowl of tortilla soup!

In order to make juice though I have to add liquid because is just pulverizes the fruit/veggies rather than squeezing the juice out.

You've got me wondering if I need a juicer as well.

Sometimes some of the pulp will get past the screen and you'll get some fiber, but it's pretty smooth. It is much less pulp with a masticating juicer than a centrifugal, and the masticator leaves the pulp dry as a bone so it is very efficient - you get A LOT of juice. There will be hardly ANY pulp left after juicing an apple, greens or celery, but carrots and beets leave the most pulp and I think it's just because of their fiber content.
