I found a series of websites to help with gaining strength, esp for pushups: http://www.hundredpushups.com/ will give you a 6 week routine to get to 100 pushups from virtually nothing. The website promotes 5 sets, with the last being a max set; 3 times weekly. It really works!

Thanks for the link! Have you ever tried it? I have stopped doing the push ups for now because I hurt my shoulder last month doing TGUs with bad form and a kettlebell that was too heavy. I am going to start again after our vacation in August. :)

Yes, I am in the middle of it now... went from PUs only on the knees to 45 regular PUs now. I don't practice strictly per the instructions, because I do a lot of pushups mixed in with other exercises in some of my routines, but I have clearly gotten stronger.

There are similar links for 200 crunches and 100 squats, (too easy ) and 25 pullups. I like your intro to pullups the best, I just have to do them!!!

BTW, I had terrible shoulder pain for years, from stretching too much! I got a minor rotator cuff injury that just never healed. When I got back into working out, I realized I had muscle imbalances left to right and front to back. I have been trying to equalize myself and after about a year, I can finally say I am usually without shoulder pain. That was one of the things limiting Pushups/Pullups for me. I am 51, so my youth is coming back to haunt me. I am ecstatic to discover that I can be in pretty good shape at this age.

... now the 6-pack I would like is a little more elusive!
