Birthday Cake Workout!

TODAY!!! What a day today has been!!! I woke up this morning to find that my husband had set up our living room for a surprise Salsa lesson for my birthday (YAY!!!), and immediately after our first lesson I got a message from my sister saying that OUR BABY SISTER IS IN LABOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right now, as I am writing, I am waiting anxiously to hear that she has delivered her son. So, because of all the excitement today and Christmas activities in general, I didn't get to make a video of my workout today - but I have enough time to make this quick entry and write down what I did. I did it 2 hours ago and my butt and legs are still tight and shaking - IT WAS AWESOME! I know that I am going to be bad tonight - Margaritas, cake, ice cream, NOM NOM NOM! - so I did a preemptive strike. It's great for warding off Christmas cookies too. ;-)

Don't forget to warm up!!!!!!!! :)

  1. Workout:
  2. Set timer for 14 rounds of 20/40 (rest/work) and follow this sequence:
  • **2-handed Kettlebell High Pulls (I don't bring the bell up as high as he does)
  • **Kettlebell Flip and Squat
  • **Kettlebell Tactical Lunges (I don't like his form, there should be a deeper bend in the knees but he keeps his body upright and core tight which is good!)
  • **Double Kettlebell Thrusters (w/ 2 bells, alternating presses L,R)
  • **rest

***remember to use the heaviest bells possible and work at MAX EFFORT! You have to earn that rest period ;-)

  1. I polished the workout with a Tabata: 8 rounds of 10/20. I did each exercise twice before moving on:
  • **Kettlebell High Pull
  • **Kettlebell HEAVY swings
  • **Rear racked lunges, L then R
  • **Thrusters, L then R

My butt is nice and toasted after this work! I hope that you enjoy it :)

But most of all, my wish is that you don't let the busyness of the season steal your joy and peace. Take some time to yourself and enjoy the gift of giving - and NO FEELING GUILTY FOR INDULGING! I read Marianne's most recent post (at myomytv.com) about not feeling guilty for not working out or being able to work off the extra holiday goodies, and I think that is such an important message! We need to take care of ourselves, but life is not worth living if you don't take the time to enjoy what the makes it so wonderful and enhances our experiences. In 10 years, what we ate or how we were able to maintain our bodies during the holiday season WON'T MATTER ONE BIT! What we will remember are the experiences we have had with the ones we love, our families and friends.

Tonight, I am going to a FABULOUS Mexican restaurante (which serves the BEST Margaritas) with all of my family, and then afterwards we are going cosmic ice skating. I absolutely cherish my family and am so grateful that even though my birthday is at the most inconvenient time of the year they always make time for me! Tonight we will have 4 generations: my grandparents, my mom, me and my children - that's four generations of (stubborn, hard-headed) women! What a night we will make it!

Hugs everyone!

Hi Melissa-
Hope your birthday and Christmas were great. Mine were for sure. I did your workout with only a few substitutions (snatches instead of thrusters due to knee soreness) and am surely feeling the pain today. My glutes and adductors are extremely sore. I wondered if you have considered stating the weight of the kettlebell you are using for these exercises. I find I am constantly fine tuning the weight so I am using the maximum weight for the best benefit, but having a guideline for reference is helpful. When you say heavy swings, what size bell are you using? The heaviest I am using is 30lbs, but I know for swings I can go heavier than that. Thanks too for your advice on the brands. Since they are sort of pricey, I want to be sure to get the best possible. Do you like the competition bells? They look bulky, but I have heard they are great too. Thanks and best to you and your family.

Kelly

Hey Kelly, Merry Christmas!

I have posted the weights I'm using in the past but I hadn't noticed that I wasn't doing it anymore. Thanks for the heads-up :)

I do have the competition bells and I do like them for variety, but I am using them less and less. I like that they are all the same size no matter what weight you use, but when swinging the balance on a CKB is a bit different from a RKB so it does feel differently and you end up changing your form (which isn't bad, just different ). I prefer to swing Russian KB, but if you can try them both out and see which one you prefer that would be best. :)

Hugs,
Melissa

ps: I use 12kg for most non swinging work, even doubles. For heavy swings I am using 20kg. :)

Hello! I am glad I came across your site. Your workouts are inspiring and have reminded me of some routines and exercises that I have veered away from. So thank you! May I post your link on my blog in appreciation for your inspiration? (I have asked this in a prior comment, however no response so perhaps you did not receive it?)
Best,
shana
